Walking through the shampoo and conditioner aisle can be a daunting task. There are hundreds of different brands, types, smells, colors, and prices. It can be intimidating trying to decide which shampoo and conditioner is right for you. However, not every shampoo and conditioner are made with the same quality of ingredients nor are they good for your hair. Whether you are in a drug store or your beauty salon, you need to arm yourself with the best knowledge to pick the best shampoo and conditioner for your hair health, type, and goal. Here are five reasons why you should invest in your shampoo and conditioner:

1. Avoid shampoos and conditioners that contain the following:

• Sodium Lauryl Sulphate/Sodium Laureth Sulphate

• Silicone

• Fragrance

• Artificial Colors

• Alcohol

• Chlorine)

These ingredients are doing more harm to your hair than good. They may cause your hair to over dry by stripping the hair and scalp of its natural oils. They may coat the hair in a film that not only makes it harder to color your hair but also harms the hair. Making it more brittle and frizzy. They may contribute to hair loss or lack of hair growth. They also may cause irritation to your scalp and skin. All in all, these ingredients are ones to educate yourself on and stay away from. Do your research and read the back of the bottles you are using. Have questions? That’s what your hair stylist is here for! Ask questions. We love them!

2. Make sure that the shampoo and conditioner that you use serves what you are in need of. It’s important to understand what your shampoo and conditioner are targeting. Do you have dry hair? Look for something that is moisturizing. Brittle blonde hair? Maybe a repairing shampoo is for you. Or one that is strengthening. Are you looking to keep your salon color vibrant longer? Keep an eye out for color safe formulas. Looking to remove buildup and product? A detox shampoo like Kevin Murphy’s Maxi wash is exactly what you are looking for! Talking with your hairstylist will give you a better insight on what your hair needs and what products you should be on the look out for.

3. Continuous use of shampoo with lower quality ingredients may result in a synthetic build up or residue in your hair, and conditioners that contain silicones can coat your hair giving it the appearance of being soft and sleek, however can be damaging hair over time and can cause hair breakage. These silicones can also be extremely hard to get out of your hair. You’ll find after multiple washes that your hair may still feel as though something coats it. And if you feel something coating your hair, you can bet that your hair is not getting the moisture that it needs.

4. Avoiding harsh chemicals can be crucial to the longevity of your hair color. They can be overly aggressive and can work like a clarifying shampoo which will end up stripping your hair color faster than normal. A professional toner that made your blonde hair the perfect ash shade can we washed away twice as fast, revealing the brassy tones you despise. Do your hair, your wallet, and your hair stylist a favor by preserving the color you all worked so hard for.

5. Salon brand are more concentrated and often contain a higher level of ingredients. Have you ever wondered why hairstylists are able to use one pump of shampoo and get such a great lather? It’s because of the concentration of product! Working shampoo in your hands with water helps to emulsify the product and clean a larger amount of hair. Less product usage means more product in the long run. You’ll find yourself using salon quality products for longer and you’ll see the results that come with it!
