Highlights, Babylights and Balayage, Oh My!

Have you ever wondered what the heck people are talking about when they say they had a balayage done on their hair? Have you wondered what’s the difference between that and highlights? Or when your stylist talks about doing babylights and you nod your head like you have a clue what they are talking about but actually are just sending up a silent prayer your hair turns out okay? Not to worry! Your friendly neighborhood hair stylist is here to let you know exactly what to expect with each service and what the differences are. All three techniques help to create lighter and brighter hair strands but all three achieve different looks.

Highlights. In the traditional sense, highlights are lighter pieces throughout your hair that help create brightness and dimension. Highlights are almost always used with foil so that your hair is better saturated with color and lifts to a brighter hair color. This is where you will see the most dramatic difference. The lightened strands reach all the way to your root, which does come with outgrowth of your natural color. Highlights are great for those who are looking for brighter and bolder hair and is one of the best services for achieving blonde hair.

Babylights. Think highlights but baby. A baby light is like a highlight but finer and less dramatic. Your hair is still wrapped in foil but less hair is used inside of the foil. Creating smaller, finer, and brighter pieces that extend all the way to the root of your hair. Often like you would see in your youth!

Balayage. Bala who? Pronounced Bah-lee-ahge, balayage is a hair painting technique where your hair stylist hand paints the lightening agents directly onto your hair. The color is then processed in the open hair leaving the finished product with a more natural looking and sun kissed look. Balayage normally starts around the mid section of your hair and ends at the end of your hair strands, which is perfect for those who don’t like the outgrown root look of highlights! The great thing about balayage is it gives your hairstylist the freedom to hand design each stroke, leaving you with an individualized hair experience.
