How to Care For Your Summer Hair

Summer! It’s finally here. There’s nothing better than long days at the beach, pool, front yard in a kiddie pool (me), just lounging and vibing under the sun. The sun and lazy days are great for your mental health but can be so damaging for your beautiful hair and scalp. Increased chemical and sun exposure coupled with the physical toll of outdoor activities can leave your hair in a damaged and fragile state.

Here are some tips to ensure you can still enjoy your favorite summer activities while protecting your hair and scalp from the harsh rays, chemicals, and lake/ocean water.

  1. Hydrate and nourish your hair from the inside out. You are what you eat comes into play here! Making sure to hydrate throughout the day and hitting your water goals will help hydrate not only you but your hair as well! Eating a balanced diet that is full of essential nutrients can help support hair growth.

  2. Protect your hair from the sun! The amazing rays that we have been craving all winter and spring are here! And they are just as damaging to your hair and scalp as they can be to the rest of your body. Make sure to pick products with UV protection, rock a hat, and use sunscreen on any exposed scalp! If you when blonde hair, take extra care not to get any sunscreen on your blonde locks. Sunscreen can cause color shifting and stains. Two things we really don’t want to happen!

  3. Wash your hair throughly! We’ve all been there. Sweaty from the summer fun, hair that has been in the pool all day, or hair that has been jumping in the lake. We may overcompensate by drowning our hair in dry shampoo or we may be too tired we hit the hay before ever stepping foot in the shower. It is SO important that you are taking care of your hair after a long day out and about. Throughly washing your hair is essential. Always double shampoo and scrub your scalp. Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash is an amazing detox shampoo that is color safe as well! It’s perfect for removing the unwanted buildup of product and chemicals from your hair.

  4. Have hair extensions? Washing your hair with care is extremely important. Ocean and lake water can become trapped in your hair and can cause over drying of the hair or in some cases mildew growth. Always always wash your hair extensions after a day in the sun and water. A helpful tip is to get your hair wet with tap water before entering any bodies of water. This helps your hair to not suck up all the “bad” things we want to keep out of your hair. Just think about all the things floating in the ocean or your local lake. I’d rather not have those things in my hair and I’m sure you don’t either.
