How To Take Care of Your Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are an investment, and you should treat them as such. After every extensions appointment, whether that be a fresh install of hair extensions or a maintenance appointment, your extensions are guaranteed to look just as gorgeous and fresh as your own hair. However, keeping them flawless and healthy continues with you and your care routine at home.

Adopting a routine at home in between your extension appointments is extremely important. Routine is key! A strict routine helps boost the longevity of the extensions you just invested in.

As your friendly neighborhood hair extension expert, I’m here to guide you through an at-home hair extension routine that will keep your hair as fresh as when you walk out my doors!

1. Wash your hair correctly. I know. I bet you're thinking. Kelsey. I know how to wash my hair! And you're right! Washing your hair extensions is just as easy as washing your own hair. You must ensure you are regularly shampooing between your hair extension rows and focusing on your scalp to prevent any oil/product buildup. It's important to remember these steps in your new hair-washing routine!

2. While we are on the topic of washing hair. NEVER go to bed with your hair extensions wet. Your hair is the weakest while it is wet. Tossing and turning in bed will result in freshly matted hair extensions! You will spend more time detangling your hair, pulling on your scalp, and your hair extensions than it would take to dry your hair. It's not a fun situation for you or the extensions you spent so much of your hard-earned money on.

3. Brush your hair extensions! And I don't mean brush through your hair once a day... I mean, brush through each of your hair wefts morning AND night. Invest in a good quality brush (A WetBrush is my favorite!), start at the bottom of your hair and work up, ensuring you are getting in between each hair weft and getting all hair tangles out.

4. I'm sure you've heard me say it a million times but go to bed with your hair in a loose braid or a low pony. This is essential for keeping your hair secure and tangle free throughout the night. As I'm sure you're catching on, tangles and mats are your extension's worst enemies.

5. Use hair oil on the ends of your extensions every night. I know, I know. Kelsey. My hair is oily. Why would I put more oil in it? Well, your hair extensions are not attached to your natural root, so they are not getting that much-needed moisture. Applying an oil once a day at night helps to keep your extensions moisturized and feel more like your own hair. Make sure to also brush through your hair after applying hair oil to disperse the product evenly.

6. Regular maintenance is crucial in keeping your extensions healthy and extending their longevity! Every 6-8 weeks, a maintenance appointment should be scheduled where we take the time to remove each extension and reinstall them closer to the root. This helps reduce tangles, hair mats, and extra strain on your natural hair.

Your hair extensions and hairstylist will thank you for implementing these steps into your hair routine! You got this!

Love,
Kelsey Mabie
